The 40th anniversary of the Granada Sherlock Holmes series is upon us and what better way to celebrate than with your friends at the Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes Podcast!  We are planning something special and in the latest episode we briefly discuss our plans and ideas for celebration (which we have affectionately named BRETTCON) including a gathering of cast and crew members,  podcast listeners, a special screening of The Blue Carbuncle with director David Carson, actresses Ros Simmons, Amelda Brown and more to be announced!

We will be holding a very special Hound of the Baskervilles reunion panel with stars Kristoffer Tabori, who portrayed Sir Henry Baskerville, James Faulkner, who played Stapleton and Alastair Duncan who was Holmes’ phrenological admirer, Dr Mortimer.

Betsy Brantley, Elsie Cubitt from The Dancing Men herself, will be at Brettcon!

Actor Jack Klaff, known for his appearances in Star Wars, For Your Eyes Only and King David will be familiar to Sherlock fans for his portrayal of the mysterious Honorable Philip Green in The Disappearance of Lady Frances Carfax.

As Miss Annie Harrison in The Naval Treaty, Alison Skilbeck portrayed perhaps the most patient character in all of the Granada series, acting as both fiancé and nurse to Percy “Tadpole” Phelps for nine agonizing weeks at his sick bed whilst also aiding Holmes in solving the mystery of the missing paper. Ms Skilbeck is known for the many one-woman stage shows she’s penned and performed as well as her appearances on The Crown, Miss Marple and various other TV and movies. We’re thrilled to say she will be joining us at Brettcon as one of our original “Adventures” series alums!

Attendees of Brettcon will be joined by the bachelor, solicitor, freemason and asthmatic known as the Unhappy John Hector McFarlane. Viewers of the series were introduced to a fresh faced young actor by the name of Matthew Solon as the intended victim of one of the more heinous crimes of the series in The Norwood Builder. With memorable acting credits in The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones, Jeeves and Wooster, and Miss Marple, as well as being another “Adventures” series alum, we’re very happy to welcome Matthew to Brettcon!

Costume designers Esther Dean and Kayt Turner will be part of a Granada production panel, discussing their work on the wardrobe throughout the series. Both women will be bringing a selection of their favorite pieces of the original, screen-worn wardrobe to exhibit and discuss, including Jeremy’s favorite “Penguin” costume and top hat, John Thaw’s wooden leg, a selection of sketches and more!

We will announce all special guests as they are confirmed, as well as confirm the Q&A Panels and meet and greet opportunities including some special photo ops, which will be put on sale when confirmed. Please note that all guests attending our event are subject to their working commitments and health, and because of this guests can cancel their appearance.

  1. Dear Gus and Luke,

Many thank yous for the podcast and for organizing BRETTCON. I was so looking forward to attending and meeting other enthusiasts of the series and your work paying tribute to it! Sadly, my in-laws booked a holiday that includes May 25th (they plan these things a year in advance and I can never keep up!). Would it be possible to join a live stream? I would be happy to contribute a fee towards the event and show my support remotely.

I thought I would share the question here in case others were in a similar situation.

Wishing you a memorable event either way!

  2. Gus, Luke & David,

Best wishes and well done gents!

Hope you all post video and photos and related content about it in the coming weeks after.

Meanwhile relax and enjoy yourselves–you certainly earned it!

    1. Justa,
It all came together even better than we hoped. And we are rarely that positive about anything. 🙂
Hoping to do a trip report podcast soon. And with luck we will share some video/audio soon too. Had a few technical issues on the day, so still waiting to see what we can do. But we’ll have more info soon.
      -Gus

  3. Argh, I only just listened to the episode which announced Brettcon for a couple of weekends ago. I’m a huge Brett fan (I managed to visit the Granada set back in the 90’s)… and I live 30 minutes from Guildford. I was even _in_ Guildford that weekend.

I shall content myself with listening to your podcast on the event.

Keep up the good work on the podcast, it’s currently my lunchtime walk listening.

  4. Oh jeez, just now hearing about it today , although a trip overseas wouldn’t have been possible in any case. I hope you guys share pics and videos! It sounds so exciting! Hope it was so awesome and fun!
